THE MOVEMENT STANDARD
The Movement Standard is a movement studio for strength, mobility, coordination, balance, skill development, and body awareness. We help people build a deeper relationship with their body through practice, not just workouts.

More than fitness…
Fitness often focuses on isolated outcomes: strength, flexibility, endurance, appearance, or performance.
These things can be valuable, but they are not the whole picture.
At The Movement Standard, we use movement as a broader practice. We build strength, mobility, coordination, balance, awareness, and skill together — because the body does not move in isolated parts.
The goal is not simply to exercise more.
The goal is to become more capable, more adaptable, and more present in your own body.

The Movement Standard is a movement practice studio in Dallas, Texas.
We are not a traditional gym, fitness class, or performance training facility. We are a place for people who want to build a deeper relationship with their body through strength, mobility, coordination, balance, awareness, and ongoing practice.
Our work is influenced by many disciplines, including strength training, gymnastics, martial arts, dance, acrobatics, somatic education, play, and stillness. Rather than separating these into categories, we use them as different ways to study the body, develop skill, and expand what is possible.
At the center of TMS is the idea that movement is not just something you do to the body. It is a way of learning through the body.
-
Our approach is built around practice.
Instead of chasing quick fixes, random workouts, or isolated exercises, we work with movement as a long-term process of development. This includes building strength and mobility, but also refining attention, coordination, timing, sensitivity, and adaptability.
Classes often include both structured work and exploratory work. You may find yourself developing handstands, crawling patterns, spinal movement, strength positions, balance, partner work, object work, or softer floor-based practices.
The goal is not simply to get better at exercises. The goal is to become more capable, more aware, and more available in your body.
We believe meaningful progress comes from consistency, curiosity, and the willingness to keep studying the small details..
-
We work with people who are curious, committed, and open to learning.
Some students come from fitness, yoga, martial arts, dance, climbing, athletics, or physical therapy backgrounds. Others are simply looking for a more intelligent and meaningful way to move.
You do not need to be advanced to begin. You do need to be willing to practice, pay attention, and engage with the process.
TMS is a good fit for people who want more than a workout. It is for those interested in developing strength, mobility, skill, awareness, and a broader understanding of what the body can become through practice.
For anyone new, the best place to begin is with our foundational classes, workshops, or an introductory session so we can help you find the right starting point.
Brian Johnson is the founder of The Movement Standard and has spent over 25 years helping people build a more capable, aware, and expressive relationship with their body.
His background includes a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology, along with decades of study in anatomy, physiology, psychology, nutrition, strength, mobility, skill development, and somatic practice. Since 2014, Brian has continued his studentship in the Ido Portal Methodology, which has been a major influence in shaping the work at TMS.
Over the years, Brian has worked with a wide range of people, including children, older adults, athletes, general movers, individuals navigating pain and health challenges, and students looking for a deeper approach to physical practice.
Rather than seeing movement as only exercise, Brian teaches it as a way of learning. His work invites students to develop strength, mobility, coordination, awareness, adaptability, and a broader sense of what it means to live a physical life.

MOVEMENT CLASSES
Our in-studio group classes are an entry point into the movement practice at TMS.
Each class explores a different layer of physical development, including strength, mobility, coordination, balance, locomotion, handstands, floor work, object work, partner work, and awareness.
Rather than moving through random exercises, students are guided through practices that help build capacity, refine attention, and expand what the body can do.
No experience is required. Come with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn.
